This blog series offers a glimpse of reSET’s summer internship program in entrepreneurship. The series will aim to capture interns’ experiences, both with reSET’s curriculum and the startups that they are working alongside. Our second blogger, Kareema Shell, is a rising senior at The University of Hartford.
I am currently studying Electromechanical Engineering Technology, and one of the reasons why I applied to reSET was to experience being part of the “business world” and to gain the knowledge and creativity that I would need to start my own business some day. One of the great things about this Internship Program is that they pair you with a small business and you learn its behind-the-scenes workings. During the first semester of my internship, I was paired with SKYWIREme, a group messaging solution startup. The platform allows you to distribute text messages, voice messages and email to your audience with ease. Working with them has allowed me to obtain insight on both the business- and engineering-side of my studies. In particular, I have learned to program and code, and about some of the things that distinguishes a business from its competitors.
Working here has allowed me to work on my developmental skills as far as what is necessary to make a small business successful. The internship has given me the opportunity to grow and to find out how to transition my ideas into actual business plans. reSET’s objective with my cohort is to make sure we get as much “hands on” experience as possible with the things we are interested in, but to also expose us to a foundational, entrepreneurial curriculum.
